Since June 2011, the City's one-million-gallon-per-day Pure Water Demonstration Facility has been open for free public tours. These public tours have provided opportunities for San Diegans to learn more about the water purification process and get an up-close look at the cutting-edge technology used to clean recycled water to produce safe, high-quality drinking water. By 2035, the purified water produced from Pure Water San Diego will provide nearly half of our water supply needs.
Construction for Phase 1 North City facilities is now underway, and the Pure Water Demonstration Facility has become an active construction site. Due to increased construction activity and heightened safety concerns surrounding a busy job site, public tours were paused in 2020.
Current tour opportunities remain limited and must be approved beforehand. All requested tours of the Pure Water Demonstration Facility and conveyance sites must be sent to purewatersd@sandiego.gov for consideration.
Interested in the technology at the Pure Water Demonstration Facility? Although in-person tours are limited, groups and individuals can watch the virtual tour for an in-depth look at the water purification technology.
Can't visit in person? Virtual tours of the Pure Water Demonstration Project are also available.
